Seagate has begun shipping its first hybrid drive. Getting to know the CEO and their top management I’ve been hearing the innovation and market launch of new drives. It looks like not only is Seagate doing well on the operations and business side but now they are executing on the product side. The Momentus 5400 PSD 2.5-inch hybrid drive has begun shipping to OEMs, four of which are qualifying the drive for inclusion in a notebook PC. Seagate did not announce the exact pricing of the drive, but said it would be charging a price premium of between 25 to 30 percent, according to Melissa Johnson, a product manager for the company. “Seagate’s disclosure of its hybrid drive plans was “a sneak preview,”a spokesman added.
The Momentus 5400 line will ship in 80-, 120-, and 160-Gbyte capacity points. Maybe its time to check in with Bill Watkins. Seagate will always have a market in storage because we are storing more media everyday.
