The Underbelly of the Blogosphere March 27, 2007

The Kathy Sierra scandal is rocking the blogosphere.  I won’t comment on the story since it’s been analyzed in full.  Instead I want to talk about the underbelly of the blogosphere.  What’s the big deal here?  Kathy got some hate mail and that is an unpleasant situation for Kathy.  In talking to journalists they all have received some form of hate mail.  The real issue here is the underbelly of the blogosphere – those nasty characters on the net.  This is not a new issue.  In the Web 1.0 we had all kinds of nasty stuff.  Nothing really has changed except that Web 2.0 has not established proper filters.

Until there are social filters in Web 2.0 the underbelly of the blogosphere will continue to show its’ ugly head.   It is key for the blogosphere community to work to establish those quality filters and promote quality.
